Buyer (Construction / Technical)

Job description


The Technical Buyer will purchase goods, materials and services to ensure that the company operational and administrative needs are met, taking into account price, quality and delivery and to ensure continuity of supply.

Key Responsibilities


  • Develops scope for RFQs, RFPs, purchasing plans and delivery schedule; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations
  • Works in conjunction with operations to effectively plan, develop and implement strategies to effectively procure goods and services to meet required objectives
  • Manage the buying process for a given set of goods in line with specified cost, quality and delivery targets
  • Provide technical / commercial assistance to Commodity Buyers to develop awareness of construction materials and improve product knowledge
  • Apply sourcing policy, interface between supplier and project with respect to specifications and budgets
  • Develop and maintain a strong foundation of function skills and knowledge of relevant purchasing and sourcing concepts
  • Manage problems and schedule changes and communicate any supply problems which may pose a risk or impact on business operations
  • Balance both tactical executions with strategic initiatives necessary to drive cost reduction on projects
  • Monitor market trends, competitor strategies and market suppliers and research and evaluate areas of opportunity and reduce costs where possible
  • Develop creative and innovative procurement processes with ideas and strategies to improve operational efficiency and add value
  • Negotiate contracts, improved prices and terms of business with suppliers and review opportunities to make business savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods
  • Assess and evaluate suppliers and undertake performance reviews to ensure contract compliance and manage performance improvement activities
  • Continuously explore alternate sources for goods and materials and assess tenders and quotations from potential suppliers
  • Prepare purchase orders in line with final negotiations with selected suppliers and in line with organizational targets and requirements
  • Contact suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery or invoice issues

Benefits Package

  • Base Salary - 14K-20K (Dependent on Qualifications and Experience)


Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Proficient-plus level user of MS Excel and MS Word
  • 4+ years as a buyer or purchasing within the construction industry
  • 2+ years Quantity Surveyor Experience 
  • Communication and influencing skills, in person and in writing
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills and decision-making skills
  • The ability to lead and manage teams and projects
  • Attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies but also the ability to see the implications for the bigger picture
  • Commercial awareness
  • Customer service
  • Organization and time management skills and the ability to handle a complex, varied workload
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and put in the time needed to get the job done
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills
  • Diploma or vocational training would be an asset
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent would be an asset
